Needs Assessment - HR Glossary
A needs assessment is a systematic process that identifies and evaluates the gaps between an organization's present workforce capabilities and the skills, knowledge, or resources needed to realize its strategic goals. It entails doing a thorough study to understand what unique requirements exist within the workforce and how to effectively meet them in order to maximize performance and productivity.

Assume a technology business wants to increase its market presence by introducing a new product line. In this case, a Needs Assessment would include determining the skills and knowledge gaps in the current workforce. HR professionals would assess workers' present skill sets, identify areas where more training or recruiting is required (e.g., software development abilities or digital marketing knowledge), and plan methods to close such gaps. This review ensures that the organization's human capital is aligned with its growth goals.
